SUMMARY:December 2021 Innovation Insights
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly webinar series “Innovation Insights” continues\, as IACMI Chief Commercialization Officer Dale Brosius moderated discussions on recent technology advancements that industry may not be fully aware of. \n  \nOn Monday\, December 13 at 12PM ET\, there was a one-hour series of presentations from IACMI members and partners\, where they provided background on new technology\, products\, and the key advantages provided\, as well as application examples. \nAttendees heard from: \n\nBob Yancey\, Business Development Director\, Hexcel\n\nComposite Material for High-Rate Manufacturing\n\nMany emerging markets for carbon fiber composites have needs for high-rate\, out of autoclave material systems. Although these materials are available for industrial applications\, many of these emerging market needs will be for aerospace where aerospace quality and specifications will be required. The presentation will review Hexcel efforts to create and qualify these material systems that will achieve aerospace quality for high-rate manufacturing.\n\n\n\n\nDr. Lorenzo Mencattelli\, Director of Research & Development\, Helicoid Industries\n\nBio-inspired Helicoid technology for lower cost\, tougher and more sustainable high-volume composites\n\nDriven by years of evolution\, bio-inspired Helicoid technology enables lighter composite structures with unparalleled structural integrity using off-the-shelf materials and conventional manufacturing processes for a cost-effective implementation. From improving rain erosion resistance in wind blades\, to achieving high perforation resistance in battery pack enclosures\, to enhancing impact performances of natural fiber composites of >40%\, Helicoid offers a unique proposition to deliver innovative solutions and enable sustainable solutions in high-volume\, cost sensitive applications such as automotive and wind energy. Light-weighting is key to electrification of transportation and to improve efficiency of renewables.\n\n\n\n\nDerek Berry\, Senior Engineer\, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)\n\nInnovation Automation for Wind Turbine Blade Finishing Operations\n\nFor over three decades\, wind turbine blade manufacturing has been very labor intensive. Although automated solutions have been explored in the past\, several factors – including high cost of equipment\, low speed of operation\, and the inability of automated systems to adapt to ever longer blades – have prevented the widespread adoption of such systems. The presentation will review recent advances in automation technology for wind turbine blades finishing operations.
