SUMMARY:Bostik/Arkema\, Composite Applications Group
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly webinar series “Innovation Insights” continued Monday\, February 10\, as IACMI EVP/CCO Dale Brosius moderated discussions on recent technology advancements from IACMI members. \n  \nWatch the Recording \nWe heard from: \nMichael Barker\nResearch Fellow\nBostik/Arkema \nCo-presenting with \nMike Stanton\nSenior Account Manager\nBostik/Arkema \nPrimerless Structural Adhesives for Bonding Low Surface Energy Composites \nRegulations mandating improved automotive/ truck fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions continues to drive the need for lighter weight vehicle technology.  The resultant use of thermoplastic olefin-based composites for exterior body panels has created a need for adhesives capable of bonding their low energy surfaces. Resulting from miss-matched coefficient of linear expansion between various substrates\, the adhesive must also accommodate relative movement in the joint due to in-service temperature fluctuations. This study will review the efficiencies of the available surface treatment techniques to enable adhesion and how the adhesives’ constitutive properties may assist creating durable bonds.  Using these contributing attributes\, the development of primerless adhesive technology capable of creating reproducible\, strong bonds with minimum surface preparation will be reviewed. \n  \nJohn Unser\nVP Program/Project Management\nComposite Applications Group \nBridging the Gap Between Composite Innovation and Cost in Industrial Markets \nOne of the biggest challenges in introducing advanced materials to industrial markets is finding the right balance between value proposition and cost parameters necessary for successful commercialization.  The presentation highlights Composite Applications Group’s impact on cost-sensitive industries by leveraging hybrid composite solutions—strategically blending materials to maximize value without driving up product costs. \n
