SUMMARY:July 2021 Innovation Insights Webinar
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, July 19\, IACMI Chief Commercialization Officer Dale Brosius returned once again to moderate our monthly webinar series “Innovation Insights” aimed at featuring recent composites technology advancements that industry may not be fully aware of. \nAttendees heard from: \nJeff DeGrange\, Chief Commercial Officer\, Impossible Objects Inc. \n\nLow-cost composite additive manufacturing\n\nThe Impossible Objects Composite Based Additive Manufacturing (CBAM) uses composite fiber sheets and matrix materials which do not need to be refrigerated\, eliminates the limited material work-life conditions and increases buy-to-ratios by recycling the matrix materials. New fiberglass substrates along with a number of thermoplastic and thermoset matrix combinations provide additional material options beyond carbon fiber for a cost-effective composite manufacturing solution.\n\n\n\nMatthew Pais\, Modeling and Simulation Industry Process Consultant Director\, Dassault Systèmes \n\nSimulation-driven design of composites in the 3DExperience Platform\n\nEngineering of composites parts is a multidisciplinary activity involving design\, manufacturing\, and simulation. Traditional approaches rely upon data transition and file exchange between disconnected composites design\, manufacturing and simulation solutions. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform from Dassault Systèmes provides a model-based environment with seamless interoperability between composites design\, manufacturing and\, simulation. No data translation occurs while being shared between composites design\, manufacturing and simulation activities. This sort of model-based efficiency enables the consideration of more alternatives and design iterations; ensuring that there is confidence in the quality of the final product while meeting all product requirements.\n\n\n\nTom Margraf\, President\, Hawthorn Composites\nco-presenting with:\nRyan Seifert\, Project Engineer\, University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) \n\nDesign & manufacturing techniques to deliver topology optimized composite aerostructures\n\nThis presentation will review leading-edge topology optimization software and composite manufacturing capabilities\, based on tailored fiber placement\, that enable the design and manufacture of highly efficient\, bio-inspired\, aircraft structures. Examples of the topology optimization and manufacturing solutions will consist of both coupon and component level results including analytical and manufacturing trials.
