Objective: Improving building energy efficiency remains one of the most pressing challenges in the built environment, particularly as many existing façades lack adequate insulation and suffer significant thermal losses. This research addresses that challenge through the development of a lightweight, structurally efficient glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) cladding panel designed for rapid attachment to existing wall systems. The objective is to create a prefabricated solution that integrates structural capacity, thermal insulation, and durability within a single composite system. The work emphasizes high thermal resistance, reduced installation time, and compliance with modern structural and weather-resistance standards for high-performance building envelopes.
Results: Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) sandwich panels were developed for exterior cladding in new construction and retrofit applications. The panels consist of composite face sheets bonded to low-density insulated cores, with layup, fiber orientation, and core thickness optimized through finite element modeling and validated experimentally for structural and thermal performance. Full-scale prototypes were tested under simulated façade loading, including positive and negative wind pressures and flexural demands in accordance with ASTM and building-code criteria. The panels exhibited a high stiffness-to-weight ratio and maintained deflections within allowable service limits. Compared to traditional cladding systems (precast concrete, brick veneer, fiber-cement), the GFRP panels achieved a 60–80% weight reduction while delivering high R-values and minimal thermal bridging, demonstrating strong potential for scalable, high-performance retrofit applications aligned with energy and decarbonization targets.
Impact: The GFRP façade panel system delivers a multifunctional solution integrating structural reinforcement, thermal insulation, and durability within a single lightweight assembly. Reduced panel mass and simplified attachment accelerate retrofit deployment and improve constructability for aging infrastructure. The environmental stability of GFRP supports extended service life and lower maintenance costs, while enabling high-performance retrofits aligned with evolving energy-code and decarbonization goals.
From the Expert: “The GFRP façade system redefines the building envelope by combining structural reinforcement and thermal insulation in one lightweight solution, cutting installation time while enhancing energy efficiency and durability.”~ Dr. Krishnan Veluswamy and UT-FCMF Cladding Team
